Shell Knob Community Services Awards Will Recognize Individuals

By Paula Andersen

The Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce is asking the community to nominate someone who has dedicated themselves to the betterment of the area.  Each year the Chamber presents two awards to dedicated volunteers who are the Business person of the Year and Community Service Award.  If you have someone in mind who fits this description visit the chamber website www.shellknob.com/events.htm and download a nomination form.  Anyone can make a nomination you do not have to be a Chamber member.  Complete the form and return it to the Chamber office by February 12.  The awards are always presented at the Chamber’s Annual meeting in March.

Shell Knob First Responders Serve Great Chili and the Community Responds

Saturday’s chilly day did not discourage the community’s turnout to the First Responders chili and soup fundraiser.  Becky Davidson, a member of the Shell Knob First Responders, and cashier for the day said that over 500 tickets were sold for this important community event.  The event included numerous donated items that were raffled off and some of the best desserts in the county were sold for a dollar.  It was a long day for the men and women volunteers who started work early and were selling hot bowls of chili from 11 am to 7 pm.

The First Responders group was started in 1991 in Shell Knob.  They have been making significant contributions in time and physical effort by helping residents deal with critical moments and saving lives for almost twenty years. They work as a team, one is a scribe and another is trained as an emergency medical person.  Many times they are the first team on the site of an accident or critical incident.  They are volunteers and work hours without pay or recognition.

Cassville attorney Cordelia F. Herrin who is running for Barry County Associate Judge, Division 2, on the Republican ticket dropped by and participated in this event. She is running for the position held by Judge Carr Woods who plans on retiring in November of 2010.  Herrin’s husband of fifteen years is local veterinarian Dr. Brent Herrin.  The First Responders would like to thank everyone for joining them for Chili fest.

On the Bayou Serving Cajun Food and Fun

We have all wondered what the hammering and loud noises were coming from the old Carole Restaurant in Shell Knob. Well, the wondering is over, and out of the oldest building and the oldest restaurant space in Shell Knob rises the newest star, On the Bayou! Will and Jennifer Robinson have created a new and larger eating venue for the  patron looking for good food at a reasonable price. Last fall, the couple recognized the fact that their four-month-old Cajun Cuisine Cafe had outgrown the facilities on the west side of Bridge way Plaza. Their new kitchen has all the latest in restaurant equipment and the dining area is bright and colorful featuring the warm colors of New Orleans.
Saturday night, February 13, 2010 will be the Grand Opening of the new On The Bayou. The new and enlarged menu will feature their famous Cajun cuisine and many other popular local dishes. The entertainment for the event will be the smoothest voice in the west, Steve Mitchell. The new restaurant will seat 60 patrons and has an area for meetings. Hours will be 11 am to 9 pm and closed on Monday. Call 417-858-0710 for additional information.

“Bushwhackers, Visions, Star-Crossed Lovers” is a Hit at Lions Club Meeting

This month’s Shell Knob Lion’s Club was fortunate to have as a guest speaker Frankie Carlin Meyer,  researcher and author of an excellent book, “Bushwhackers,  Visions, and Star-Crossed Lovers”.  It contains over 100 years of information about the  families that settled in the Ozarks mountains.  As a native with access to several generations of stories, family experiences, and photos to draw upon she has created a unique book that travels across four generations.  She describes her research as a “thirst” that led to thirty years of research.  During that time, she visited cemeteries, libraries, museums, National Archives, old home sites, historical sites, county courthouses, and records centers.  She also drew upon her family’s history and has compiled seven family history books.  During the last twelve years, she has shared her work by writing over 700 newspaper columns about Ozark history and genealogical research methods for the Joplin Globe.

Monday night, using a power point presentation of photos going back over 100 years Mrs. Carlin brought to her audience fresh insights regarding Ozark history and the families that created it     She was able to draw us into history by speaking candidly about family dinners, neighborhood fights, celebrations, bushwhackers, and hangings.  These people loved the land that was hard to gain a living from and gave little in return.  But the land gave these pioneers a mental toughness that provided them with resourcefulness and a love of knowledge that transferred into a love of learning.    Education was promoted and teachers welcomed into homes for meals and housing.

Mrs. Carlin’s voice and presentation style  is like listening to a storyteller and you are comforted by the way she  paints a series of stories about the Ozarks that are insightful. The book is divided into seventeen chapters and contains maps, charts of the area, and the various families.  It is a quick read as it written in a series of vendettas about events, situations and families. You will bring away from it a greater understanding of the proud and tough spirit of the Ozarks. You may contact her at Carlin Ridge Publishing Company, 2235 Fallen Oak, Joplin, Missouri, 64801 for copies of her book  or for  future speaking events.

Pets can Laugh too!

Laughing Matter

Originally published on January 28, 2010

If you have the feeling that your dog is smiling at you, it could be that he or she is ready for some fun.According to a recent study of dogs at play, researchers observed a distinctive rapid panting behavior that appeared to be the equivalent of laughter in dog language. The pant was used to communicate pleasure and evoked playfulness in other dogs. The next time you play a lively game of fetch with your pup, listen closely. The panting you hear may actually be a hearty laugh.
