News from the Harvest Garden at the Central Community United Methodist Church written by Betty Ragland

Fall is in the air and you are invited to attend the Fall De’Cor Sale and Open House on Oct. 7th from 10am to 3pm  Corn stalk bundles, pumpkins, and much more will be available.  While there, take time to tour the garden and enjoy free refreshments.  The garden is located on the west side of the church.

The garden is an outreach ministry involving the community, connecting Shell Knob residents with the ability to grow fresh food and sharing the harvest with those in need of healthier diets.  By the end of the growing season the garden will have produced approximately 850 pounds of produce with 650 pounds being donated to the Alliance of Churches Food Pantry, the Senior Center, and to His House Foundation.

Two different youth groups have been involved.  The local Kid’s Night Out program planted in one of the individual beds and helped plant pumpkins in a straw bale garden and sweet potatoes in the in-ground garden.  In July, thirteen youth from Hood United Methodist Church came to Shell Knob on a mission trip.  They spent two days in the garden.  Their projects included building the last five individual beds, creating an entrance path, mowing, watering, and harvesting.

Your financial support will result in larger food production and educational opportunities not only for our community, but extending out beyond our borders.  Gardener applications will be available for the 2018 growing season.
