By Paula Andersen

In June of 2009 the Johnson Family opened Vintage Ozark located at the junction of Highway 39 and 76 four miles north of Shell Knob, Missouri. They took a landscaping business site, remodeled the interior and added five booths for vendors. Bill and Jim Johnson owned Big Bobber Resort and had a love for collectibles that had filled the buildings at the resort and the office there. Their love for collecting had outgrown their homes and they decided they needed to expand. They took many items from their storage areas and moved them to their new space they named Vintage Ozark. With the help of Jim’s wife, Rose, they started shaping the look of Vintage Ozark. They created a web site, started advertising and asked three local collectible dealers to join them in filling booths in their new enterprise.

Jim Johnson says, “It takes a lot of patience, hard work, and a real love of the business to keep it going. Of course, you cannot be under capitalized as it will take at least three years for the market outside of your local area to recognize your presence and your skill at buying and selling quality antiques and collectibles. We wanted to create a shopping experience that allowed customers to take their time and appreciate the value of the items that we had for them. You will not find a lot of overseas items or non-American made furniture in our store. Everything is well-marked and most of the time we are wiling to consider offers on most of our inventory. It is a good place to shop for a bargain.”

In the winter of 2009, the Johnson’s added another 1000 square feet to the building and places for another 10 vendors. Their business this year has been good and they are going to expand again, connecting the existing secondary building of 2700 square feet to the main building creating over 7000 square feet of antiques and collectibles for shoppers looking for a quality item at reasonable price.

Shoppers at Vintage Ozark will find a Tool Corner for individuals looking for shop tools, hammer’s , vise grips, and wire cutters. But is also easy to find fine furniture for bedrooms and living areas. There is a large selection of DVD’s, cassette tapes, and VHS tapes along with the equipment to play these sources of entertainment. Rugs, towels, dishcloths, jewelry, collectible coins, currency, wall hangings, books, and candy enhance the selection of butter churns, Red Wing pottery, Ansonia clocks, fishing lures, watches, and belt buckles. Shopping at Vintage Ozark is a visit into our nation’s past but it is also buyer’s dream when it comes to value for your dollar.

Keep It Simple seems to mean all that much more because of the recent Stock Market’s bouncing up and down and thousands of our soldiers returning from the war in Iraq. Questions of where are these men and women are going to find a job, find low cost housing and health care are needing answers and quickly. Most of the Ozark citizens have been holding true to the KIS principle for years. Their steady reliance on thrift and conservative spending have gotten them through many of the country’s financial traumas. Reading through the various newspapers and Internet news services you realize that Ozark citizens rely on donating to needy individuals. They bypass many government and state handouts and prefer to give from their hearts, their hands, and pocketbooks. They identify needy and worthwhile causes and then get down to the grist of the matter by offering a day’s free labor or handing dollars directly into the hands of those in need. We, at Ozark Advertiser will be honoring those groups in the next month by providing stories on whom they sponsor and how they assist them in getting on their feet.

Please reread this article published in February 2010. Please sign in on this web site and make additional comments either pro or con regarding the water quality of this area. To date the concerns voiced in this meeting have NOT been resolved. the water is still muddy and undrinkable. They have claimed they have tested the water in March. They left messages in the doors of 100′s of part-time and full time homeowners but did NOT

follow up with a report on the safety of drinking the water that were brought to light at the meeting. The Aqua website is still hard to understand and navigate. Phone calls concerning outages go unanswered and homeowners are not informed when outages occur. The result is bath water and clothes that are ruined by pests, debris, and mud in rinse water.

by Paula Andersen

The Shell Knob Elementary school gym warmed with the heated comments of 35 plus individuals that chose to venture out Thursday night. The crowd started to arrive at 5 pm for this important official Public Hearing in response to AQUA’s request for another rate request. This will be the third in 3 ½ years and equates to a 180% increase in revenue for this utility. Judge Harold Sterling officiated with members of the Missouri Public Service Commission assisting in collecting facts from local water customers. Christina Baker, of the Office of Public Counsel introduced the purpose of the meeting as twofold. “We are here to collect facts concerning billing issues, service to customers, and the quality of the water provided by this company. “

The meeting started with an informal question and answer exchange that quickly turned heated as customers argued with AQUA representatives that a rate increase was economically a hardship on the communities in southern Stone and Barry County. A major point of contention was that by arbitrarily increasing the minimum water usage to three thousand gallons, as a basis for supplying water to individual households was cruel to householders with less than two people in them. This fact brought a loud outcry from the audience. The Public Service Commission officials sought to bring order to the commotion by saying,” These are the comments and facts that we need to bring to the official meeting and have them verified by testifying under oath.” He asked that attendees fill out forms with their names, addresses and statements and sign up to speak in the order that they signed.

The official meeting started at 6:15 pm, took over three hours and was recorded on a video camera along with a court reporter taking each person’s disposition as they testified under oath. Physical evidence collected included a jar of foul smelling water and Judge Sterling accepted this as evidence. Reports of people trying to reach AQUA by phone, by emails, by personal letters of inquiry, and by visiting their webpage created an image of a company that was unresponsive and had turned their backs to their customers needs. The facts collected portrayed an image of a large utility that had heavy-handedily pushed their way into people’s lives and then choose to ignore even the basic humanitarian issues; communication of essential information, awareness to their customers’ needs, and clean inexpensive water!

Other issues included the facts that people need to know when their water was fouled by broken water lines, boil water notices need to be sent or customers called to alert them. AQUA customer services need to eliminate over-billing and then issuing shut off notices when people were still questioning why they were billed in the first place. A non-user friendly web page that offered no current information other than the fact that the water was tested in 2007 and was safe at that time needs to be updated. Problems such as callers left on the line for over 20 minutes when they called for answers to issues and callers who gave up because to obtain basic customer service you had to have too much information to reach an AQUA customer service representative brought loud ugly comments .

All of the local consumers present voiced their opinion that the rate request be refused by the Missouri Public Service Commission. Those issues held by AQUA that the cost of providing the water have increased because electricity cost, chemicals costs, and of their investment in upgrading the district were blown out of the water by testimony of speakers that noted replacing a water tower twice—“Why not do it right the first time?”. About AQUA employees giving out the wrong answers to consumers, or no information given about breakages, breakages not fixed for a week or more, and confusion about whether or not the water is safe to drink. Reports of dishwashers clogged, water heaters ruined, washing machines hoses broken with debris from water line repairs, and refrigerators destroyed by high pressure were countless. The crowd repeatedly supported speakers that told of taking showers with debris and muddy water floating around their feet.

Ruth Murray, a community advocate, and key person to bringing this issue to the attention of Representative Sater posed two significant questions to Aqua representatives. She asked as to whether or not AQUA was making any money for itself and its stockowners. Ms. Murray has been a timeless advocate of citizen’s rights. When she raised the question about the potential of DNR requirements for sewage discharge issues being changed and the cost charged back to homeowners by AQUA there were no answers offered. Other comments referred to the lack of transparency of AQUA’s motives as a public service utility and the actual need for their rate increase.

The fourth Saturday night of every month the Shell Knob Lions Club is sponsoring a community dance as a part of its’ community service projects mission. “Dancing is an excellent way to exercise and invigorate oneself,” said Lion President,” Richard Nierman. “We want the local communities to enjoy this opportunity for an evening of fun. The four dollar admission helps to cover the cost of the band and the use of the building,” he added.

The Shell Knob-Viola Community building located ½ mile south of the bridge on Hwy 39 is the site of these dances. They start selling tickets at 7 pm and many come for the excellent food prepared by the Lions Club Ladies. The Loxburg County Band featuring Evelyn Lock plays until 10 a.m. There is no smoking, no drugs, and no alcohol allowed. Children under 15 are free when accompanied by an adult.
